When ESP released its new series of Cryogen Hooks in March of 2016 the brand knew it was onto something golden. However, it wasn’t entirely prepared for the huge outcry of support that it received as carp anglers recognised the advantages that these uniquely manufactured hooks offered them. There were soon calls for more ESP Cryogen hooks in the series and the brand, already with hooks in development, were happy to oblige. This ESP Cryogen Grip Rigger is, as the name suggests, the product of a beautiful marriage between the original Cryogen Grippers and Cryogen Stiff Riggers. Combing the shape of the best selling Stiff Rigger with the devastating beaked point of the Gripper, this hook ensures that you can enjoy an exceptional hold – in fact, it is such a good hook that it can almost be considered unfair on the carp as it really will have no choice once it takes the hookbait! This Grip Rigger fills the gap between a chod or stiff rig hook and a beaked hook, bringing you the best of both worlds! In fact, the brand is confident in stating that the Cryogen series is between 30% and 40% stronger than any other PTFE coated hook on the market – although the exact figure is hard to ascertain. As the name suggests, this ESP Cryogen Para-Point Hook has been designed using a unique cryogenic tempering process. Most commonly used in the motor sport industry, where it is used to strengthen the resilience of engines in Formula One cars, this is a process which alters the molecular structure of steel. In fishing hooks, this reduces the hook’s susceptibility to stress, increases its resistance against the kinds of wear and tear which you would usual expect to damage a hook on the bank, and it improves overall hook strength. This results in a hook which is, on average, between 30% and 40% stronger than traditional fishing hooks. The process first involves super heating the hook to temperatures in excess of 180 degrees. This is the point at which traditional fishing hooks are left to cool and packaged, but it is only the start of the process in the life of an ESP Cryogen Hook. The hook is then super-cooled over an extended period of time (usually 24 hours), bringing the hook temperature down to minus 195 degrees. This is the cryogenic freezing process and it is where the real strengthening magic happens. Finally, the hook is slowly brought back up to an ambient temperature – again over a number of hours. Not only does the ESP Cryogen Para-Point hook benefit from ESP’s cryogenic tempering process but it also benefits from a PTFE ‘Tufflon’ coating. A stronger and more durable version of Teflon, Tufflon ensures that the hook is super-slick – your fish won’t even have a chance!

The team set to work to design a product to fill the gap, utilising their brand new technology, and this ESP Cryogen Gripper was the result. This new hook is a combination of the classic T-6 and D-7 series, both of which were best sellers in their day, and it has been described as the perfect hook for fishing with bottom baits. It has been designed with a 10 degree in-turned eye, which is slightly shallower than that of the ESP Cryogen Classic in order to allow for an improved beak, and it features a super-fine, long, curved point for impressive hook holding ability. One of the biggest benefits of this new hook is its improved corrosion resistance. Terry Hearn, the living carp fishing legend, was wowed during the testing process of this hook as, even when fishing on acidic and silty bottomed pits, he has never experienced point corrosion with this hook – giving him the confidence to leave his rig out there for hours without the itching feeling that he needs to reel in and check that all is well.
